Keith R. George
3 April 1954–26 March 2008

Many of you knew of Keith as “The Czar” when he was commissioner of the OSC Co-Ed Softball League in the early eighties. He always greeted everyone with a smile, and he was always looking for a way to improve things. Many of you will remember Keith’s “Moustache rides for a dime” t-shirt. Keith was not only a star softball player but he also was a scratch golfer. He enjoyed both sports tremendously.
Keith met his wife, Maria Schmidt, in the Omaha Sports Club. They were married for 22 years and had four children, three sons and one daughter: Kyle and Kent (the twins), Blake, and Breanna. Fourteen years ago they moved to North Carolina. Kyle, Kent, and Blake now attend Lenoir-Rhyne College in North Carolina and play on the school’s golf team. Breanna, meanwhile, is a sophomore at South Caldwell High School.

Keith was diagnosed with a inoperable stage-four brain tumor in early October 2006. At the time, doctors said he had a life expectancy of up to six months. The initial chemotherapy and radiation treatments shrunk the tumor from the size of a tennis ball to the size of a pea. Because of this almost unheard of success, Keith was able to return to a somewhat normal life of retirement for about 8–9 months. Earlier this year, however, he began having numbness in his right side. Doctors discovered that Keith’s first tumor was growing again and that a second tumor had appeared. Keith fought valiantly for almost three months before the cancer finally took his life.

Eight of us from Omaha flew down to attend Keith’s service. It was a very touching ceremony. Keith had a lot of friends, and we all will miss him very much. I am sure he is up in heaven giving God some tips on how to streamline things up there. Hopefully, he will let Him win at golf. If you would like to send a memorial, please send it to the Caldwell County Schools, 1914 SW Hickory Blvd., Lenoir, NC 28645.
